History of Thasos

Have Fun

Thassos Island, steeped in legend and history, has been a captivating destination since ancient times. According to the great historian Herodotus, the island derived its name from a Phoenician named Thassos. Legend has it that Thassos, while searching for his sister Europe, stumbled upon the island and was enchanted by its abundant forests, gleaming white marble, and shimmering gold. Alternatively, the name may originate from the Greek word for forest, “dassos”, with the initial “d” transformed into “th”.

Evidence of human presence on Thassos dates back to well before 2000 BC. However, it wasn’t until around 700 BC that the island saw permanent settlement by the Parians. The industrious Parians played a significant role in developing the island, exploiting its rich natural resources with dedication and vigor.

Thassos quickly flourished into a prominent economic hub, its products coveted in markets far and wide. Its currency held considerable sway, thanks to the lucrative gold and silver mines that fueled its economy.

The island became entangled in the politics of the ancient world, participating in the Peloponnesian War alongside various factions, including the Athenians and Spartans. However, the toll of war took its toll, leading to economic decline and the eventual collapse of its formidable fortifications.

Under the rule of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, Thassos was absorbed into Macedonia. The island played a role in Alexander’s legendary conquests. During the Roman era, Thassos experienced a resurgence in its fortunes, enjoying newfound economic prosperity.

In the medieval period, Thassos fell prey to marauding pirates, leading to a drastic decline in population. Though a brief resurgence occurred under the Venetian Gatilusi family in 1353, the island fell under Ottoman rule in 1455, plunging into poverty and stagnation.

Thassos regained its independence on October 18, 1912, with the assistance of the Greek fleet, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its history.

Thassos boasts a rich cultural heritage, having been the birthplace of notable figures such as Polygnotos, the renowned painter of antiquity, and Theagenis, a celebrated athlete of ancient Greece. The island also takes pride in Polygnotos Vagis, a world-renowned sculptor whose works adorn the halls of the world’s largest museums, with some pieces still found in his hometown of Potamia village, Thassos.

Among the illustrious visitors to Thassos was Hippocrates, the father of medicine, who resided on the island for three years. His observations on the island’s climate and winds provide valuable insights into the ancient world.
